Tautona Safaris GM, Moses Mokone, says that his recent purchase of 10 Linhai quad bikes has helped to boost his business. “We now have 12 of these machines and so many of our guests love to experience our wonderful natural environment while driving these exhilarating, powerful machines,” he says.
Tautona has standardised on the Linhai Rustler 260 XL 2X4 Quad Bikes, which are sold and maintained by Maubra Utility and imported and distributed in South Africa by Smith Power Equipment (SPE).
Owing to the improved gearboxes and motors in the new Linhai and Polaris ranges of quad bikes and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) Rangers, engine and gearbox services for both are required only after 100 hrs of use as opposed to the run in time service of 50 hrs.
Being distributed in South Africa through equipment supplier Smith Power Equipment (SPE), the quads and the ATV rangers are used for robust tasks, such as working in off-road conditions that can be muddy, uneven or traversing up and down hills, explains SPE Polaris and Linhai product range national sales manager Mark Chittenden.
So quiet and efficient are her Linhai ATV Rustler 260 quad bikes, iconic horsewoman, Michelle Mazurkiewicz, uses them side-by-side with the horses on her trails. “We have many situations where some members of a family want to go on our beautiful trails but for one reason or another do not want to do them on horseback. So instead of being left out they join the ride on a Linhai quad,” she says.
Michelle adds that the Linhai machines are perfectly suited for this activity. “They are easy to handle, they run quietly and are powerful enough to handle any terrain. Of course, our horses have got used to moving alongside these machines and we have never had any trouble,” she says.
The continued economic growth of agricultural exhibition Nampo Harvest Day, in the Free State, reflects the importance of agriculture to the economic growth of South Africa, says equipment supplier Smith Power Equipment (SPE) Polaris and Linhai product range national sales manager Mark Chittenden.
Having attended the show for the past 16 years, he notes that every year, SPE showcases new products at the show in order to reach a broader customer base. “This year, we will be relaunching the Linhai range as some of the products have been revised. We will also have new models on our Polaris stand as well as have a new tractor from equipment manufacturer Kubota and the 8 t KX080-3 Kubota excavator.”

Zebula Golf Estate and Spa, certainly one of the most successful golf estates in South Africa, says that its diverse offering of entertainment is one of the important reasons for its sustained success over the years.
“Bush walks and drives, spa treatments, golf on a world-class layout, interactions with animals, fishing, archery, clay target shooting, tennis and horseback and quad bike safaris are just some of the of the entertainment opportunities available for all members of the family,” says Zebula’s Carla Groenewald.
Eugene Swart, MD of Outdoor Motoring, one of SPE’s leading dealers, says that the units have been an unmitigated success in this application. “I suggested they take the Linhai Rebel 400 because it is an excellent and reliable product with reasonably priced parts. Also the site is a relatively easy one to negotiate and the Linhai 400 is ideal for these circumstances,” says Swart.
Smith Power Equipment (SPE) specialises in high-ticket capital equipment for farmers that includes tractors, quad bikes, generators, forklifts, golf utility vehicles and golf carts and according to SPE communications officer, Robert Keir, the importance of creative financial solutions and good service from the finance house in closing the deal is often underestimated.
“I have seen the power of creative financial solutions from Merchant West time and again. Today one has to accept that there is basic product parity in the market and the so-called extraneous factors like service and financial solutions that fit the customers’ needs are most often the factors the ultimately make or break the deal. In this regard we owe Merchant West a significant debt of gratitude,” says Keir.
“It’s obvious that power and, above all, reliability, are key to providing the best possible security service and with SPE and Linhai we are assured of these. This, combined with the good price we were offered made the choice a fairly simple one,” van der Mescht says.
Guys and gals. Here’s the skinny. Diesel power is getting better and better – and simply on a scale of economy, it makes enormous sense for companies to utilise this technology. Linhai has just launched their new 3 cylinder Perkins powered 800 – and it does the job… This is an agricultural workhorse.
That’s the bottom line, it feels like one – and runs like one. And that’s a good thing. Power, utility, practicality, the new Linhai seems to tick all the boxes. Best of all, we like the quality feel of this machine.
