Smith Power Equipment (SPE) specialises in high-ticket capital equipment for farmers that includes tractors, quad bikes, generators, forklifts, golf utility vehicles and golf carts and according to SPE communications officer, Robert Keir, the importance of creative financial solutions and good service from the finance house in closing the deal is often underestimated.
“I have seen the power of creative financial solutions from Merchant West time and again. Today one has to accept that there is basic product parity in the market and the so-called extraneous factors like service and financial solutions that fit the customers’ needs are most often the factors the ultimately make or break the deal. In this regard we owe Merchant West a significant debt of gratitude,” says Keir.
Silence is golden in most environments where generators are required and the Kipor 20SS3’s sound attenuation canopy, which features a flame-proof, heat-resistant, rock wool sound insulation, provides truly remarkable noise retention.
“Silence is truly golden in most environments where generators are required,” says Smith Power Equipment’s (SPE) Power Products division GM Tom Bloom, “and the Kipor 20SS3’s sound attenuation canopy, which features a flame-proof, heat-resistant, rock wool sound insulation, provides truly remarkable noise retention,” he says.
Kipor, distributed in South Africa by Smith Power Equipment (SPE), reports an unprecedented demand for its portable generators in the household market.
‘There are several reasons for this,” says Tom Bloom, GM of SPE’s Power Products division. “Firstly our portable generators are easy to use and are famous for their reliability. Secondly, they run quietly, which is a massive advantage in the home environment and, thirdly, we have built up a world class service and support network in the unlikely event of there being any problems,” he says.
Fly-by-night generator dealers are doing harm to consumers and the generator industry as a whole. This is the opinion of Tom Bloom, GM of Smith Power Equipment’s Power Products division, distributors of the well-known Kipor brand of generators.
“At this time in South Africa when there is an unreliable electricity supply and the generator market is experiencing an unusual surge in demand, there are many chance-takers who see generators as a way to make a “quick buck”, says Bloom. “These people often do not have the experience or the expertise to give the right advice and, most importantly, are not able to give the requisite backup service.”
Namibian Breweries, brewers of the famous Windhoek beer, take no chances in their impeccable, clockwork-like operation. So their decision to use specially designed Kipor forklifts is a feather in the cap for this fast-growing brand of warehouse materials handling equipment, which is distributed in Southern Africa by Smith Power Equipment.
In the latest order Namibian Breweries took delivery of three Kipor KDF25 – 2.5 Ton Diesel – and three KD35 – 3.5 Ton Diesel – forklifts, which are being used to load trucks with product from the warehouse. Sister company, Namibia Dairies (also owned by the Olthaver & List group) received three Kipor KDF25s.

Well-known Delmas sheep and seed farmer Frikkie Rossouw needed help urgently. His problem was that his forklift, used mainly to off-load fertilizer bags, simply could not do the job properly because the terrain was too rough!
Enter Suneé Heyns, Smith Power Equipment (SPE) Kipor sales executive, Hennie Breytenbach from Kipor dealer Agriquip and Hennie Hattingh from Tubestone, well-known tyre and tube distributor, and the problem was solved quickly and efficiently!
When forklift truck sales and rental specialists, Action Equipment Company (AEC), were first introduced to the Kipor forklift range three years ago they were a little sceptical. “We move very cautiously in our business, which has been a major reason for our success,” says AEC marketing manager Yolanda Jeffries. “So when we were first introduced to the Kipor product, while it gave an excellent first impression of quality, we still needed to see for ourselves. The fact that Kipor was being distributed by Smith Power Equipment (SPE) was the deciding factor for us to take it on and prove it was a great product,” she says. And prove it they did! In the three years that AEC has been a Kipor dealer it has bought more than 100 Kipor forklifts from SPE.
