When Stephen Mangold began his working career in the family business of Mangolds more than five decades ago, golf clubs were run very differently.
“Back in those days, when our company had acquired the Ryan Turf maintenance equipment agency for South Africa, golf clubs were managed by a club secretary, a resident golf professional and a greenkeeper. Often the club pro would double up as the person responsible for the upkeep of the course. The game was relatively affordable, but of course standards of turf conditioning was nowhere near what they are today, and even having an irrigation system, much less one operated via a computer, would have been considered the stuff of science fiction,” he says.
Smith Power Equipment (SPE) is certainly setting the right precedent in the golf cart industry in South Africa with both its Club Car Precedent i2 golf cart and Club Car Villager 4 personnel carrier which have demonstrated countrywide why they are the most popular on golf courses, golf estates, resorts and hotels and just about anywhere where safe, economical and fleet-footed transport is required.
The Precedent i2, probably the most advanced golf cart ever built, has set the standard for style and performance. Powered by the Club Car electronic fuel injection (EFI) engine arguably the most economical gasoline engine in the market or, if preferred, an electric motor, it offers the quietest, smoothest ride from tee to green.
Smith Power Equipment (SPE) specialises in high-ticket capital equipment for farmers that includes tractors, quad bikes, generators, forklifts, golf utility vehicles and golf carts and according to SPE communications officer, Robert Keir, the importance of creative financial solutions and good service from the finance house in closing the deal is often underestimated.
“I have seen the power of creative financial solutions from Merchant West time and again. Today one has to accept that there is basic product parity in the market and the so-called extraneous factors like service and financial solutions that fit the customers’ needs are most often the factors the ultimately make or break the deal. In this regard we owe Merchant West a significant debt of gratitude,” says Keir.
The Els Club at Copperleaf is a big place – big in size, big in beauty, big in character and big in success. But this is not surprising as connected to this exciting golf development in Centurion near Pretoria are a number of really big names like Investec Bank; the ‘Big Easy’ Ernie Els – one of the great golfers of all time and South Africa’s most popular golfer; Toro and Club Car – amongst the famous brands in golf course equipment; and the man directing it all on a day-to-day basis Dave Usendorff – one of the legends of local golf.
Steven Shearer, Zimbali’s GM, says that the deal agreed to with Modern Mowers was competitive and that their excellent service levels are appreciated by the Zimbali staff. “No matter how good the machines are, and Club Car is certainly top of the range, the after-market service and support is vital in a deal like this and Zimbali has been working well with Martin Finch from Modern Mowers since 2002,” Shearer says.
Golf Data has taken delivery of a range of equipment from Smith Power Equipment (SPE) for the soon to be opened Steyn City Golf Course. Steyn City, on the urban edge of Sandton, Gauteng, is the result of well-known South African businessman Douw Steyn’s vision to ‘build a city like no other on the African continent – a lifestyle estate founded on the principle of community and quality of life.
open, matches the vision. “It has magnificent views and numerous water features including dams and creeks. But, most importantly, it is a user-friendly course with wide fairways and a network of walkways, which will encourage everyone to play or to just walk and enjoy the spectacular environment,” says Golf Data’s Fanie Bester.
He adds that the entire development exudes excellence and building and maintaining the golf course demands the same level of service and expertise. “For this reason we had no hesitation in getting our new equipment from SPE which not only has outstanding products, like Toro, Club Car and Kubota, but has proven over many years that they back these products up with an equally excellent level of service and support,” Bester says.
To date Golf Data has taken delivery of: TORO – 4 X flex 21s, 1 sidewinder 3500, 1 X utility spray rig Workman 3300, 3 X zero turn rotary mowers; KUBOTA -1 X STV 32 Tractor; CLUB CAR: 7 X 500 series carry-alls.
SPE director Lionel Coetzee who has worked with Golf Data for decades says that his company never takes for granted this excellent relationship. “We deeply appreciate the business we have got from Golf Data over the years and will continue to give them the best possible service that we can. We look forward the Steyn City opening and to working closely with them in the future,” Coetzee concluded.
